On June 6, 2025, Amazon Web Services (AWS) officially announced the launch of its 38th global region and 15th Asia Pacific region, Taipei (ap-east-2) . This major deployment marks the upgrading of Taiwan's position on the global cloud strategy map, and also means that local enterprises have ushered in a new generation of infrastructure options with higher performance, lower latency, better compliance and sustainable value .

This article will deeply interpret the actual impact and development opportunities brought about by the launch of the AWS Taipei region from four aspects: business strategy, industry application, technical details and ESG integration.

1. What is the AWS Taipei Region? Why is it so important?

AWS Taipei Region (codenamed ap-east-2) is a regional data center established by AWS in Taiwan. It consists of three independent availability zones (AZs) with independent power supply, cooling, network and physical security equipment. It is completely different from the previous architecture of only setting up local data centers (such as Local Zone):

According to AWS' announcement, it will continue to invest billions of dollars in Taiwan over the next 15 years . This is AWS's largest infrastructure project in Taiwan in the past decade.

2. Current open services and technical capabilities

As of today, AWS Taipei Region supports more than 61 key cloud services , covering six major areas: computing, storage, database, network, security, and monitoring:

Categories

Available services (partial)

EC2, ECS, EKS, Lambda

3. Five Values of Taipei Regional Activation for Enterprises

  1. Reduce latency and improve user experience

    1. Local deployment reduces user latency to less than 10ms, which is ideal for highly interactive applications such as:

      • Video streaming, game platform

      • Real-time financial transactions (FinTech)

      • Smart Manufacturing System (Industry 4.0)

      • Medical Cloud Image Processing

  2. Strengthening data sovereignty and regulatory compliance

    1. AWS Taipei Region supports the need for enterprises to keep their data in Taiwan , especially for:

      • Financial institutions comply with FSC regulations

      • Government tenders or state-owned enterprise contract requirements

      • Personal information protection and cross-border compliance management

  3. Improve high availability and operational stability

    1. The three AZ architecture allows enterprises to easily deploy a cross-region fault-tolerant architecture to effectively resist disaster risks, data center failures or single point failures.

  4. Support ESG and cloud sustainability

    1. AWS is committed to using 100% renewable energy by 2030. The launch of the Taipei region will allow businesses to:

      • Tracking Cloud Carbon Emissions with AWS Sustainability Dashboard

      • Incorporate computing sustainability into ESG reporting frameworks (e.g. CSRD, TCFD)

      • Becoming a member of a sustainable supply chain helps us obtain international orders and investments

  5. Cooperate with government subsidies to launch intelligent transformation

    1. Taipei regional activation can be used as a key resource element in applying for government subsidies (such as SBIR, SIIR, and the Ministry of Digital Development). By introducing ESG smart applications through cloud technology, there is an opportunity to compete for high-value funding support.

4. How to enable AWS Taipei Region (ap-east-2)

Activation steps:

  1. Log in to AWS Console → Click the drop-down menu in the upper right corner

  2. Click " Manage Regions "

  3. Find Asia Pacific (Taipei) in the list and check it

  4. Click " Activate " and wait 1-2 minutes for the activation to complete.

Once enabled, you can select Taipei as the deployment region for services such as EC2, S3, and RDS.

5. Comparative Analysis with Other Asia-Pacific Regions

The Taipei region has obvious advantages in latency and data sovereignty. Although the number of services is relatively small, it has the incentive to "go to the cloud first" for certain industries.

6. Future Outlook: Towards AI-ready Cloud & Edge-First Taiwan

The launch of the AWS Taipei region is not just about setting up more servers, but a strategic extension of AWS's global cloud deployment. Currently, AI services have not yet been introduced, but companies can consider the following layouts:

  • Short-term deployment strategy : deploy core applications locally + train AI models in Tokyo

  • Mid-term planning : Data lake construction and machine learning platform planning (cross-region synchronization)

  • Long-term goal : Combine Edge AI, IoT + ESG architecture to create integrated systems such as smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare

By combining the potential applications of AWS Greengrass, IoT Core, and Bedrock, Taiwanese companies can gradually build a new generation of computing architecture that is "low latency + AI-ready + ESG compliant."

The launch of the AWS Taipei region is an upgrade of infrastructure and a change in corporate governance logic. From compliance with regulations on data storage in Taiwan, to key indicators of ESG sustainable governance, to the preparatory actions for the integration of AI, SaaS, and IoT technologies, enterprises
